Notes
Tips for the Perfect Cheesy Marmite Tart:
- Cheese Choice: While cheddar is traditional, feel free to experiment with a blend of cheeses! A mix of mature cheddar and a bit of mozzarella can add extra meltiness, or a touch of Parmesan for more depth.
- Marmite Quality: The strength of Marmite can vary. For the topping, ensure your Marmite is well melted with the butter for even distribution. If you prefer a stronger Marmite flavour, you can slightly increase the amount in the topping, or even add a tiny swirl into the batter.
- Batter Consistency: The recipe states the batter shouldn't be too thick. It should be easily pourable, similar to a pancake batter but perhaps slightly denser. If it feels too thick, a tiny splash more milk can help achieve the right consistency.
- Don't Overbake: The tart bakes quickly (10 minutes at 200°C). Keep a close eye on it to ensure it's golden and set but still soft. Overbaking can make it dry.
- Serving Warm: This tart is truly at its best served warm, allowing the cheese to remain soft and the Marmite topping to be perfectly gooey. Pour the topping over the tart immediately after it comes out of the oven.
- This Cheesy Marmite Tart is an incredibly versatile warm side dish. It pairs wonderfully with roast chicken, beef, or lamb.
- Serve it on its own as a quick lunch or a substantial savoury snack.
- It's a fantastic addition to any South African braai spread or a potluck gathering.
- Enjoy a slice with a cup of tea or coffee for a comforting afternoon treat.
- Extra Savoury: Add a sprinkle of chopped chives or spring onions to the batter for a fresh oniony note.
- Spicy Kick: A pinch of cayenne pepper or a dash of hot sauce in the batter can add a subtle warmth.
- Onion Infusion: Finely sautéed caramelized onions folded into the batter would add another layer of savoury depth.
- Garlic Butter Topping: For garlic lovers, add a tiny bit of crushed garlic to the Marmite butter topping.
